The Story
The famous martyr of Rome, St Laurence, lived in AD200. He was one of seven deacons who oversaw giving help to the poor and the needy. St Laurence’s trouble started when rabble-rousers, who did not like Christians, decided to kill Pope St. Sixtus II. As the Pope was led away for execution, Laurence followed him weeping, giving the money he had to the poor and even selling expensive church vessels, so he could give away even more of the church’s wealth.
The Prefect of Rome, a greedy man, thought the Church still had a great fortune hidden away and demanded that Laurence bring its treasure to him. Laurence searched the city, gathering all the poor and sick people who were supported by the church. He showed them to the Prefect and said, “These people are the Church’s treasure” The Prefect was furious and ordered that Laurence should be tied on top of an iron grill and slowly roasted over a fire, to increase his suffering. God gave him so much strength and joy that Laurence joked with his tormentors saying, “Turn me over, I am cooked on this side.”
